My work laptop had a 3/4" plug that lets me lug in another monitor or overhead projector.  But, it's hosed because I clicked "later" on an alleged Adobe update.  <sigh>  Awaiting the company techs to rescue me.

So I am working from my personal desktop.   The laptop has a second, nice, big monitor, and I thought that I would move it to the desktop and make life easier.  (With it, I can work and still see Teoti!  )  There is a 3/4" spot on the back of the desktop that the monitor can plug into.  I doesn't work.  Device Manager doesn't recognize it.

Under Display Adapters, I see one NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT.  On the back of the desktop, I see an adapter where the 3/4" plug of the first monitor plugs into a 1+" spot.

No Bytey available, unfortunately.

I don't understand this. You mean you're going to work from a desktop box instead of the laptop?
Plug in the monitor, right click on the desktop, go into settings (or properties or something, depending upon windows version) you will need to enable multiple monitors in there, probably there is something like 'extend my desktop'.

I did, and nothing happened.  Why else would I ask an idiot question?

Yes, the laptop has a virus/malware.  It broke things, like I cna't open any exe file without fiddling.  There is a new item on the right click.  It is broken.

So, I want to use the 2nd monitor with the desktop.

I will try again.

Just to clarify: you are trying to get a second monitor/projector working with a desktop workstation?

If two devices aren't picking it up, maybe it's a dud, or has a bad cable.

It works on the laptop.

Maybe the desktop just doesn't support it.  a blank plug in on the back of the desktop.

Now I'm lost. Why not use the laptop then? I don't get it.

What windows version are you using?

win 7 on both.

The laptop is hosed.

I can’t start the firewall.  Double clicking won’t open anything.  It gives me the list of “what program do you want to run this in” and all the list includes is the PDF program.  I can open Outlook only by finding it in the Microsoft Office directory, right clicking and clicking “start”.  Open won’t get me anything but the ugly list.  Mostly, I can only run as an Administrator using the “start”.   I have never before seen “start” on the right click menu, and it is the only item on that menu that is not capitalized.

I ran Malwarebytes’ AntiMalware, and SUPERAntiSpyware multiple times.  The malware kit left on my machine included MGTools and I ran it.   I did not run the SuperAntiSpyware Repair, although it looks like I might need to.

Error code 0x80070424

I think I got it  by clicking on an alleged Adobe update—I do believe I said later, too, so I didn’t even agree to the update.  I googled the error code, and decided that it was too dangerous for ME to fiddle.  Ignorance is not bliss when you muck up your work computer.

Meanwhile, I work from home, in FL.  And I know you do NOT want me to VPN in.  By happy happenstance, since I DO work from home as a software tester (among other things), I have GoToMyPC installed on this machine.  The developers and I often work together on the same computer.

I got trashed right after Thanksgiving and Kevin Greer fixed me up.   I think he left the SuperAnti thing on as part of startups, It’s a hidden icon on the systray.  Then I added The following Firefox add-ons:

AdBlock Plus 1.3.10
FlashBlock 1.5.15.1

I think I got something that alleges it is Microsoft something 2012 with a blue and yellow shield, very like MS often uses.  But, it wanted money.

This is more than I will deal with, because I don't know quite enough.

Ok on the back of the nVidia video card there might be two out ports for monitors, it will not be the older dsub type plug it will be a DVI plug of some type, will look like this:

If you don't have two of those on the back of the video card, you won't be able to run both, the older plug was dissabled when the better video card was added, also of course the monitor needs to have a DVI port on it and then you need another DVI cable, also the real pain with DVI is that there are a few different pin configurations and you might not be able to make it work without an adapter even if you have everything else

This will help out figuring that part out:

Yep.  No adapter.    Oh well.  Maybe when Bytey gets home he can find one.  Or maybe the IT guys at work will get off their duffs and fix the @!#$@# laptop.

Chances are the second one that you're attempting to plug into is integrated into the motherboard, and was disabled when the GeForce card was installed (some BIOSs actually does this automatically if they detect another video adapter). Is the other one you're trying to plug into parallel with the first one, or perpendicular to it? z0phi3l was on the money with the DVI adapter.

That other connector, BTW, is called a DB-15 ... FWIW ..

And the IT tech couldn't repair the laptop.

Yeah, it never occurred to me. Z0ph had it right. An adapter would be needed.
