Actually, it's father is the walkman, not the MC

Nope, you put the tape in the walkman, so he's the daddy... Didn't your parents teach you this, Speedo boy?

I'll be really impressed if anyone here knows what these are.

My parents had a movie player that was pre VCR and the movies were on what looked like a 3.5" floppy, but 10x bigger.

//edit, found out ther name of the massive disks...

You're right, Flee. They're phonograph cylinders. There was a market war between cylinders and discs in the early 1900's much the way that there was a war between Blue-Ray and HDDVD in more recent times. I presume records discs beat out cylinders, 1. because they were easier to ship and store, and 2. because the large flat surface of the LP's cover was much more marketable since people could easily slap some art or photography onto it.

Funny you say that... The Capacitance Electronic Disc was beaten out by VHS. It turns out CED is a great failure of RCA.

I've hated the fact that DVD's (and now Blue-Rays) are so vulnerable to damage. The ones I'd get from Blockbuster, Netflix, or the Library were invariably covered in scratches and fingerprints, and were usually rendered impossible to play. I don't know why the industry couldn't have designed something that had a protective casing on the outside like a minidisc or a floppy.

If CEDs beat out VHS, you may be living your dream. Its like a laserdisc in a nice case.
(you wouldnt normally pull it out like this. The whole thing would slide into the player.)

When I was at CERN, I saw that they used only magnetic tapes to record the data. For what I remember, it was about the amount of data, and the durability of the medium. I think all new editions of old music / films are still being made from the master tape. I've only seen one of them laser disks, and it was turned into a clock (?)
