Microsoft has a majority market share

Ubuntu >> Bugs >> Bug #1 (liberation)

Bug Description

Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace.
This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix.

Non-free software is holding back innovation in the IT industry, restricting access to IT to a small part of the world's population and limiting the ability of software developers to reach their full potential, globally. This bug is widely evident in the PC industry.

Steps to repeat:

1. Visit a local PC store.

What happens:
2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software pre-installed.
3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed.

What should happen:
1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like Ubuntu.
2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and benefits would be apparent and known by all.
3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.

I believe that a new system from retailer should have Linux & Windows Preinstalled on seperate drives.
The main problem I've had with linux, is that I could never install it. If my pc would have come along with linux preloaded, then I could have used it along with windows. I've only tried installing linux mint, not Ubuntu.

If systems come preinstalled with 2 os's then it would be a lot easier to learn the dual os linux in free time for many users...

EDIT: This post made my score = 777 !!!

I really hope any Debian-based distros sort out the nVidia driver problem. It's driving me mad. MAD. MAAAAAAAAD.

Nouveau is an attempt to make a standard open accelerated nvidia driver.

(current standard open driver is nv which is non-accelerated)

I don't agree. By and large, open source software is nowhere reaching it's true potential, and this isn't Microsoft's fault. Microsoft does not send out secret agents to inject open source developers with 'stupid'. Lawsuits by M$ aren't holding anyone back, and even SCO's ill-fated jaunt into legalistic bombast didn't upset the Open Source applecart.

Proprietary software is not restricting access to IT. That is just silly. It is competing with Open Source, but that is different. M$ and others are competing to gain market share in the developing world, so what?

We can't possibly contemplate the amount of f/oss developers that are in fear of developing because they could be sued.

This is why the Software Freedom Law Center exists http://www.softwarefreedom.org/

This is why the Open Invention Network has a massive defence patent portfolio sponsored by some big players http://www.openinventionnetwork.com/licensees.php

And yeah Proprietary software does restrict innovation with all this software patent bullshit.

Tell you what, you list all the open source innovations, and I'll list all the proprietary ones. Guess who'll win? Not only that, it wouldn't even be close. Open Source is great, and I love it, but this is bullshit.

I can contemplate the amount of fear, ffs, give me a break. I notice here http://www.softwarefreedom.org/ that they are the ones suing Westinghouse Digital Electronics. Hardly being pushed around by the 'proprietary bullies', now, are they?

Software patents would, if you think it through, encourage innovation rather than stifle it. If I can't use an arrowed mouse cursor (for sake of argument) then I will have to come up with some other method of achieving it's functionality, or even change the game entirely, and eschew mouse cursors altogether in favour of a new paradigm. It seems that using the same shit that everyone else does would be a bigger innovation killer. Necessity being the mother of invention, and all. Your mileage may vary.

The threat to Open Source has diminished to the point of nullity as far as I can see. Have you specifics which indicate otherwise?

Edit: Probably the best Open Source products are found at either end of a http conversation, Firefox/Mozilla and Apache. And these are hardly new projects...

That's why patents were created. To bring innovation through ability to advance with your idea. That is also why it was purposefully limited by definition and time frame. That way you can get your foot in and will have to innovate again to stay in the game. But that has changed now with very wide meaning patents and ever increasing ownership times(thanks Disney).

It used to be you could only patent a design or process of something physical but now lawyers have changed definitions to allow software patents because they can be defined as a process. Even though it's a semantic change now software companies are suing and licensing(which developers couldn't afford either) all over the place. This doesn't just hit f/oss but also small software businesses.

I posted a short film about it here: http://www.t-six.com/showthread.php?p=416033

I confess I had forgotten about software patents, which suck major balls. But in fairness, they affect proprietary developers too. They should be rescinded immediately.

1. That's copyright violation
2. We were talking of developers, FSF are more an activist organisation(but they do some development)
3. If they didn't go after GPL violators then the whole thing is pointless
4. initiated in December 2009 on behalf of the Software Freedom Conservancy and BusyBox developer Erik Andersen <-- Kinda proves my point.
