Defending the Android family
Major phone manufacturers are praising the decision of Google to buy Motorola for $12.5 billion, with the likes of HTC, Sony Ericsson and LG all seeing the purchase as an indication of defence of the Android family.

The snapping up of Motorola is fairly clearly Google's major play in the ongoing patent battle, with Moto's 14,600 phone patents (and a further 6,700 patent pending) giving it a huge leg up against the likes of Microsoft and Apple.

Google has recently declared its anger at two of its rivals banding together to buy patents in what is claims is a "hostile, organized campaign against Android".

The purchase of Motorola could well represent a turning point in the dispute, and the major manufacturers – minus Samsung at the present time – appear to see it the same way.
Defending Android

"We welcome the news of today's acquisition, which demonstrates that Google is deeply committed to defending Android, its partners, and the entire ecosystem," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC.

"I welcome Google's commitment to defending Android and its partners," stated Bert Nordberg President & CEO of Sony Ericsson.

"We welcome Google's commitment to defending Android and its partners." Jong-Seok Park President & CEO of LG Electronics echoed.

The statements have been published on a page on Google's press site – and it remains to be seen if other members of the Android 'family' will add their own input.

Just don't hold your breath for Nokia praise.

Well holy shit, Google done thrown down the gauntlet now, Apple better be shitting themselves. Just the patent portfolio Google will get should concern Apple and MS, no longer will they be able to pick on Android manufacturers anymore because the odds of Google will likely have a similar patent they can cross license those patents , and knowing Google it will be free or almost free for their partners

@Mark I'm waiting on the next Nexus phone, the GS2 is taking too long to get released here and my GS is getting a bit long in the tooth

You know what, I couldn't give a crap about Android. It is a buggy piece of shit. The only reason I'm happy to have it around (and this is a major one) is that it fosters competition that forces Apple and MS to innovate and add new features on their software.

not sure what cheap ass Android phones you have tried, because Android is not buggy at all, and having used the main three smartphone OSes, I can guarantee you that Android is the best one out there.

I'm developing an iPad/iPhone website right now and it is THE BIGGEST LOAD OF BUGFEST SHIT I have ever come across.

iOS Web Bugs

They advertised theirselves as being HTML5 friendly and flash beaters but their current OS doesn't run canvas at greater than 10 frames..

The HTML5 video plugin either forces controls on the iPhone and if you have controls you have no event propagation beyond that so you can't scroll down a page

You have to physically press a play button to play a video - they won't allow you to play anything via javascript activation

Sizes are lost left right and center on page elements when you move them so you have to double check everything

Pages flicker massively when you add them into view and change a single attribute

When you zoom into a page that you have designed a while back using CSS image maps, only on iOS do you have to make a bleed for every image map

When you scroll down a page it kills all other javascript events

Android Web Bugs

It's a bit slow on webkit css rules.

Large images make the page slow.

That's about it.

So don't give me no shit about android, it is a dream compared to iOS. It's only because some of the apps you've opened were written by script kiddies (I'm talking to you, HTC). I'm never buying an apple mobile device, they're just toys.
