Can't touch this..

Kodak has filed for bankruptcy in a bid to survive a liquidity crisis after years of falling sales related to the decline of its namesake film business as digital cameras have taken over the market.

Eastman Kodak Co, the photographic film pioneer, which had tried to restructure to become a seller of consumer products like cameras, said it had also obtained a $950m, 18-month credit facility from Citigroup to keep it going.

"The board of directors and the entire senior management team unanimously believe that this is a necessary step and the right thing to do for the future of Kodak," chairman and chief executive Antonio M Perez said on Thursday.

Kodak and its US subsidiaries had filed for Chapter 11 business reorganisation in the US bankruptcy court for the southern district of New York, the company said.

Non-US subsidiaries were not covered by the filing, it said.

Kodak had been under pressure ever since September when it drew cash from a credit line, tipping investors off to liquidity issues.

Kodak's management and board were briefed last Friday about the company's efforts to secure bankruptcy financing.

The company is struggling to sell a portfolio of patents that would help bolster its cash position.

On Wednesday Kodak said it had filed a lawsuit against Samsung alleging infringement of certain patents related to Kodak digital imaging technology.

Well, it's not gone yet. It does have a very powerful brand, they could do well in the camera business, like they did before. Software too, and other media related thingies. But it would be very tricky to change what was essentially a chemical company into a digital imaging company. That's a huge change. I think the Kodak brand would make it worth it, plus they have some nice products available.

The cameras are great.
Their easyshare software is crap.
The new market will be DIY Photo Kiosks similar to what is in Walmart.
Something that will produce lab quality prints... better than most home printers...
at a reasonable cost... cheaper than buying special ink and paper...
and enclosed in a cabinet the size of an atm machine.
They could be installed everywhere from theme parks, hotels and airports to gas stations, convienence stores and supermarkets. I can imagine them in interstate rest areas, computer stores, malls, commercial buildings that house insurance companies...

The tech is already in place. It just needs better marketing and pricing.

They just don't make the proper effort... the problem with these companies is that they stick with what they thought used to work and don't actually keep up with the trends

True. I bought a Kodak camera and I regret my purchase because it forces me to use the Easyshare software to every time I transfer pictures to the computer. It's a damn nuisance. I miss my Nikon, where I could simply copy/cut and paste like it was a jump drive. I'll never buy a Kodak brand camera again.

Best way I found to deal with the Kodak software junk is to never install it, exit installation when it attempts, then use the explore option on the memory instead of autorun/open *triggers autorun* to go in and copy/paste the pictures. A few seconds of messing around but better than dealing with their software.
